You've finally started wondering whether mold could be the missing piece.

Maybe you've dealt with:

Or maybe someone told you to skip all of those and just test your house first.

😩 No wonder people feel stuck.

Here's the truth…

Not all mold tests answer the same question.

That's the biggest mistake I see.

People assume every mold test tells you whether mold is making you sick.

It doesn't.

Each lab measures something completely different.

And if you misunderstand what your test actually measures, you can spend hundreds—or thousands—of dollars chasing the wrong problem.


The Biggest Myth About Mold Testing

Here's the myth:

"If I get one mold test, it'll tell me everything I need to know."

I wish that were true.

But it's not.

Think about it this way.

Imagine you're investigating a crime.

One witness tells you who was in the room.

Another tells you what weapon was used.

A third tells you when it happened.

Each witness gives valuable information.

But none of them tells the entire story.

That's exactly how mold testing works.

Different tests answer different questions.

Some tell you whether you're currently producing mold-related compounds.

Others show whether toxins are leaving your body.

Others tell you about your home.

Others tell you about allergies.

They're all pieces of the puzzle.

The key isn't finding the "best" test.

The key is choosing the right test for the stage of healing you're actually in.


OAT Test vs. Mycotoxin Test: What's the Difference?

Let's clear this up.

These two labs often get lumped together because they're both urine tests.

That's where the similarities end.

The Organic Acids Test (OAT Test)

The Organic Acids Test, sometimes called an OAT test, is a urine-based lab.

You complete the organic acid test urine collection from home.

Many companies even provide an organic acids test kit or organic acid test kit that ships directly to your door.

The lab doesn't directly look for mold.

Instead, it measures metabolites.

These are byproducts created as your body interacts with mold.

That distinction matters.

When certain fungal metabolites appear on an organic acids test, it often suggests something much more important than simple exposure.

It suggests mold colonization.


What Is Mold Colonization?

This is where many practitioners miss the mark.

There's a huge difference between:

  • Walking into a moldy building once
  • Living with mold growing inside your body

I like to explain it this way.

Imagine breathing in one mold spore.

A healthy immune system may eliminate it.

No big deal.

Now imagine years of exposure.

Those spores begin taking hold.

They colonize your sinuses.

They colonize your lungs.

Your body becomes the environment where mold continues living.

You're no longer just exposed.

You're carrying it.

I jokingly tell clients:

"You're the moldy piece of bread."

It sounds dramatic.

But it's memorable.

And it explains why symptoms become so persistent.

The Organic Acids Test is one of my favorite ways to identify this type of long-term colonization because it often reveals what other tests completely miss.


Why I Recommend the OAT Test First

Here's where I differ from many practitioners.

Many people jump straight to a mycotoxin test.

I don't.

I recommend beginning with an Organic Acids Test first.

Why?

Because it answers the question I care about most.

Has mold actually taken hold inside your body?

If the answer is yes…

Everything changes.

Your priorities change.

Your treatment changes.

Your timeline changes.

Instead of wondering whether mold "might" be an issue…

You have evidence that your body needs a targeted strategy.

That's why, inside the Better Belly Method, the OAT test is typically the first lab I recommend for clients beginning their mold journey. It provides meaningful information early and helps avoid unnecessary testing costs.


What a Mycotoxin Test Actually Measures

Now let's talk about the other major player.

The mycotoxin test.

This is another urine-based lab.

You'll also hear it called:

  • Mycotox Test
  • Mycotoxin Test
  • Mycotoxin Test Urine
  • Mycotoxin Urine Test at Home

These tests don't measure mold itself.

Instead…

They measure mycotoxins.

Think of mycotoxins as the toxic chemicals mold produces.

Different molds produce different toxins.

Labs may identify toxins such as:

  • Ochratoxins
  • Gliotoxins
  • Aflatoxins
  • Trichothecenes

That sounds incredibly useful.

And it is.

But there's one enormous limitation.

The test cannot tell you where those toxins came from.


Here's Why That Matters

Imagine your mycotoxin urine test comes back positive.

Great.

Now ask yourself…

Did those toxins come from:

  • Your current home?
  • Your workplace?
  • A hotel you stayed in?
  • A water-damaged church?
  • An indoor swimming facility?
  • Exposure from years ago that your body is only now clearing?

The test doesn't know.

It simply shows that toxins appeared in your urine.

That's why I don't recommend using a mycotoxin test lab as your very first step.

Without context, it often creates more questions than answers.

And when you're already exhausted, the last thing you need is more confusion.


Why Starting With the Wrong Test Can Delay Healing

I understand the temptation.

You want the "best" lab.

The most comprehensive one.

The one that promises every answer.

But healing rarely works that way.

A smart testing strategy saves time because each result builds on the last.

That's why I encourage clients to think like detectives, not shoppers.

The goal isn't collecting the most labs.

The goal is collecting the right information in the right order.

In the next section, we'll walk through how to interpret an OAT test score, the hidden mold markers most practitioners overlook, and why someone can have severe mold illness even when their mold markers appear "normal."

How to Read an OAT Test for Hidden Mold (What Most Practitioners Miss)

Here's something that surprises a lot of people.

I've reviewed hundreds of Organic Acids Tests (OAT tests).

And one of the biggest mistakes I see isn't the lab.

It's the interpretation.

Someone gets an organic acid test urine report.

Their practitioner glances at the first page.

They say:

"Good news! You don't have mold."

But when I review the exact same lab…

I often find evidence that mold is still playing a major role.

Why?

Because many people only look at the obvious mold markers.

They never look at the hidden ones.


The First Page Only Tells Part of the Story

The first page of an Organic Acids Test contains a section labeled Yeast and Fungal Markers.

This is where practitioners usually focus.

One of the biggest markers I watch is:

  • Tricarballylic Acid

When this marker is elevated…

That's a very strong indication of mold colonization.

I've seen clients with only one elevated fungal marker who were still incredibly sick.

You don't need five abnormal results.

Sometimes one significant marker tells the story.

Another marker you'll often see is Arabinose.

This one deserves clarification.

Arabinose isn't primarily a mold marker.

It's much more closely associated with Candida overgrowth.

If it's borderline or elevated, I'll often investigate yeast alongside mold because these two problems frequently occur together.

Treating only one often leaves the other untouched.


The Hidden Mold Markers Most People Never Check

Here's where things get interesting.

Imagine your fungal markers look completely normal.

Does that automatically mean you don't have mold?

Absolutely not.

This is where the OAT test becomes much more powerful than most people realize.

I always continue looking at two additional sections:

  • Mitochondrial Markers
  • Ketone & Fatty Acid Oxidation Markers

These sections often reveal the effects mold has on your body—even when fungal metabolites appear low.


Mold Wrecks Your Mitochondria

Your mitochondria are your body's batteries.

Every cell depends on them.

When mold begins colonizing the body, those batteries struggle to produce energy efficiently.

The result?

Symptoms people often dismiss as unrelated.

Things like:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Poor exercise recovery
  • Weight changes
  • Muscle pain
  • Fibromyalgia-like symptoms
  • Feeling exhausted despite sleeping

This isn't simply "low energy."

It's cellular dysfunction.

When mitochondrial markers rise on an organic acids test, I start asking much bigger questions about chronic mold exposure.


Mold Also Changes How Your Body Uses Fat

Another clue hides inside the Ketone and Fatty Acid Oxidation section.

Many people assume these markers only matter if they're eating keto.

Sometimes that's true.

If you're intentionally following:

  • A ketogenic diet
  • Carnivore
  • Very low-carb eating

These markers may naturally rise.

But if you're eating fruit…

Potatoes…

Rice…

Or other carbohydrates…

Those elevations become much more suspicious.

One of the biggest reasons I see these markers climb is mold colonization.

Mold interferes with how your cells create energy from fats.

That creates ripple effects throughout your metabolism.

Your body struggles to make ATP efficiently.

You feel it everywhere.


A "Normal" OAT Test Can Still Point to Mold

Here's something many people never hear.

Sometimes the fungal markers stay low because your body isn't detoxifying well.

Think about that.

If your detox pathways are overwhelmed…

Your body can't move mold metabolites into your urine.

And if they never reach your urine…

The lab can't measure them.

That creates what's called a false negative.

This is one reason I never evaluate just one section of an organic acid test kit.

I look at the entire picture.

That's also why symptom history matters.

Lab interpretation should never happen in isolation.


Why Detox Capacity Changes Everything

Imagine trying to judge how much traffic exists on a highway.

But every exit ramp is closed.

You'd think there weren't many cars.

In reality…

They're all backed up.

Your detox pathways work similarly.

When detox slows down:

  • Fewer mold metabolites reach the urine.
  • Fungal markers may appear deceptively low.
  • Hidden mitochondrial damage becomes even more important.

That's why I refuse to call someone "mold free" based on one normal-looking section.

The body leaves clues.

You simply have to know where to look.


Don't Forget the GI-MAP

Here's another connection I pay close attention to.

If you've already completed a GI-MAP, you may already own another important piece of the puzzle.

One marker I always review is:

Secretory IgA (sIgA).

This measures part of your gut's immune response.

Here's the pattern I commonly see.

Early mold exposure often pushes sIgA very high.

Over time…

Chronic mold suppresses the immune system.

Then secretory IgA becomes very low.

Interestingly, low secretory IgA is one of the most common patterns I see in clients dealing with long-term mold illness.

It's not diagnostic by itself.

But when it's combined with an OAT test score, symptoms, and clinical history, it becomes another valuable clue that mold deserves serious attention.


Why I Don't Recommend Using AI to Read Your Labs

This might surprise you.

People regularly upload their lab reports into AI tools and ask for an interpretation.

I understand why.

It feels fast.

It feels convenient.

But here's the problem.

Lab interpretation isn't about reading numbers.

It's about recognizing patterns.

One isolated marker rarely tells the full story.

You have to connect:

  • Symptoms
  • Exposure history
  • Detox function
  • Mitochondrial health
  • Gut health
  • Hidden fungal markers
  • Supporting labs

Miss one piece…

And the entire conclusion can change.

That's why I've seen people told they "don't have mold," only to discover later that their existing labs already contained the evidence—they just weren't interpreted correctly.


By this point, you can probably see why I recommend the Organic Acids Test before jumping straight into a mycotoxin test.

But that doesn't mean a Mycotox Test isn't valuable.

Far from it.

When a Mycotoxin Test Becomes Incredibly Valuable

By now, you probably understand why I don't recommend starting with a mycotoxin test.

That doesn't mean it's a bad test.

Far from it.

I use Mycotox Tests all the time.

I just use them later.

Here's why.

A mycotoxin urine test measures the toxins mold produces.

But it doesn't tell you where those toxins came from.

That makes timing everything.

Imagine you've already:

  • Moved out of a moldy home.
  • Confirmed your current home has low mold levels.
  • Begun treating mold colonization.
  • Supported your gut.
  • Improved detoxification.
  • Reduced your symptoms.

Now a mycotoxin test becomes incredibly useful.

At that point, you're no longer asking:

"Am I exposed?"

You're asking:

"Which toxins are my body still trying to eliminate?"

That's a completely different question.

And that's where precision healing begins.


My Two Favorite Markers on a Mycotoxin Test

When I review a mycotoxin test lab, I don't immediately focus on the toxins most practitioners mention.

I look for two markers first.

Every time.

1. Mycophenolic Acid (MPA)

This marker deserves far more attention than it gets.

According to mold expert Dr. Jill Crista, mycophenolic acid is associated with actively growing mold colonies.

In other words…

This isn't simply evidence that mold existed somewhere years ago.

It suggests you're currently being exposed to mold that is actively growing because there's an ongoing moisture source.

Think:

  • A hidden plumbing leak
  • High indoor humidity
  • A leaking refrigerator water line
  • Water damage behind drywall
  • A leaking dishwasher
  • Another active water intrusion

Here's the problem.

Many labs report MPA as "normal" if it falls below their reference range.

I disagree with relying on that interpretation alone.

If any measurable MPA appears, I want to investigate further.

I've seen too many cases where that small clue pointed someone toward an active mold problem that everyone else missed.


2. Gliotoxin

The second marker I immediately check is gliotoxin.

Why?

Because gliotoxin tells a very different story.

Gliotoxin is commonly associated with mold actively colonizing the body.

That means mold isn't simply passing through.

It's establishing itself.

When I see gliotoxin alongside symptoms like:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Frequent infections
  • Poor recovery
  • Histamine issues
  • Persistent sinus congestion

…I become much more concerned that mold has become an ongoing internal problem instead of a temporary exposure.

It's one of the closest markers on a mycotoxin urine test to what the Organic Acids Test is trying to identify.

That's why I pay so much attention to it.


Not Every Positive Mycotoxin Test Means You're Sick

This may be one of the biggest misconceptions online.

People assume:

"If my mycotoxin test is positive, mold is definitely causing my illness."

Not necessarily.

We're exposed to mold regularly.

Our food contains mold.

Outdoor air contains mold.

Many buildings contain low levels of mold.

A healthy body constantly detoxifies these exposures.

That's normal.

A positive mycotoxin urine test may simply show your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do—eliminating toxins.

That's why context matters.

Symptoms matter.

History matters.

Environment matters.

No single lab should determine your entire treatment plan.


My Step-by-Step Mold Testing Strategy

If you're wondering where to begin, here's the process I recommend.

Step 1: Start with an Organic Acids Test (OAT)

This helps identify whether mold has likely colonized your body.

It also gives valuable insight into:

  • Mitochondrial function
  • Energy production
  • Yeast overgrowth
  • Detox pathways
  • Nutritional deficiencies

An OAT test provides much more than mold information, making it one of my favorite foundational labs.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Home

If mold appears likely, don't stop with your body.

Investigate your environment.

A great protocol fails if you continue sleeping in the same water-damaged bedroom every night.

Removing exposure matters.

Your body cannot heal while constantly fighting new mold.

Step 3: Begin Internal Healing

Support the body.

Improve digestion.

Address gut health.

Strengthen detoxification.

Reduce mold colonization.

This creates the foundation your body needs to begin clearing stored toxins.

Step 4: Use a Mycotoxin Test for Precision

Once exposures are minimized and healing has begun, a mycotox test becomes a precision tool.

Now you can identify which toxin families still require extra attention.

That's a much smarter use of your investment than ordering it on day one.
