Mold Test Kit 101: How to Test Your Home & Body
If you've been dealing with mystery symptoms...
Fatigue.
Brain fog.
Digestive issues.
Hormone problems.
Anxiety.
Skin rashes.
Headaches.
…and you've started wondering whether mold could be involved...
You're probably asking yourself one simple question:
"How do I know if I'm actually sick from mold?"
It's a great question.
It's also where most people go wrong.
Instead of getting answers, they spend months—or years—bouncing between specialists, trying supplements, changing diets, and ordering tests that never tell the full story.
I've watched it happen hundreds of times.
Here's the good news.
You do NOT need a dozen expensive labs.
You don't need to test everything under the sun.
And you definitely don't need to guess.
After helping more than 150 clients navigate mold illness, I've found that nearly everyone can begin with just two simple tests.
One tells you whether your body is dealing with mold.
The other tells you whether your home is keeping you sick.
That's it.
Let's walk through both.
Why Most Mold Testing Misses Toxic Mold Exposure
One of the biggest myths I hear is this:
"My doctor tested me for mold and said everything was normal."
Maybe.
But what kind of mold test did they run?
That question changes everything.
Most conventional doctors order a mold allergy test.
Sometimes it's a blood test.
Sometimes it's a skin prick panel.
Neither one tells you whether you have toxic mold exposure.
Instead, they measure something completely different.
They measure an allergic immune response.
Mold Allergies Are Not Mold Illness
A mold allergy involves a specific immune pathway called IgE.
IgE reactions include symptoms like:
- Sneezing
- Watery eyes
- Itchy skin
- Hives
- Swelling
- Asthma symptoms
- Severe allergic reactions
Those reactions are real.
But they are not the same thing as mold illness.
Many people who suffer from black mold or toxic mold exposure have completely normal allergy testing.
That's because they aren't reacting to mold as an allergen.
They're reacting to something much more dangerous.
Mycotoxins: The Real Reason Mold Makes So Many People Sick
When certain molds grow, they release poisonous compounds called mycotoxins.
These toxins affect nearly every system in the body.
That's why mold symptoms seem so random.
One person develops migraines.
Another develops anxiety.
Someone else struggles with constipation.
Or insomnia.
Or chronic fatigue.
Or autoimmune symptoms.
The list goes on.
That doesn't make mold impossible to diagnose.
It simply means symptoms alone aren't enough.
I've seen people chase:
- Lyme disease
- Parasites
- Heavy metals
- Hormone imbalances
- Gut infections
- Food sensitivities
...only to discover later that mold was quietly driving everything.
That's why I don't rely on symptoms.
I rely on testing.
Stop Guessing—Answer These Two Questions First
Whenever someone starts their mold healing journey, I ask two questions.
Question #1
Is my body sick from mold?
Question #2
Is my home making me sick?
Notice the order.
Most people immediately jump to their house.
They buy a home mold test.
Or they search online for:
- mold testing near me
- mold inspection
- mold detection services
- mold test kit
- mold home test kit
But here's the problem.
If mold isn't affecting your body...
Testing your home won't change your health.
I prefer starting with the body first.
It's usually faster.
It's often less expensive.
And it tells us whether mold belongs in your healing plan at all.
The Best Mold Test for Your Body Isn't a Blood Test
This surprises almost everyone.
When I evaluate someone for mold exposure, I don't start with blood work.
I use an Organic Acids Test (OAT).
Specifically...
I recommend the Organic Acids Test from Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly Great Plains Laboratory).
After comparing multiple versions over the years, this remains my preferred option.
Here's why.
Why I Love the Organic Acids Test
This test checks far more than mold.
That makes it one of the highest-value functional medicine labs available.
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on separate testing, one urine sample provides a tremendous amount of information.
It evaluates markers connected to:
- Mold
- Yeast overgrowth
- Candida
- Bacterial overgrowth
- Clostridioides difficile (C. diff)
- Oxalates
- Mitochondrial function
- Neurotransmitter metabolism
- Nutrient status
- Energy production
That's incredibly valuable.
Because mold rarely shows up alone.
When someone has chronic mold illness, I often see additional root causes hiding underneath.
The Organic Acids Test helps uncover those connections.
