I Have Toxic Mold Exposure. What Do I Do First?
You've Been Told to Start Taking Supplements...
...but what if that's exactly why you're still sick?
I can't tell you how many people come to me after spending thousands of dollars on supplements, food sensitivity testing, detox kits, binders, and restrictive diets.
They're exhausted.
They're frustrated.
And worst of all?
They're convinced they're somehow "too broken" to heal.
Then we uncover the real problem.
They're still living in mold.
And suddenly everything makes sense.
If you're dealing with bloating, constipation, fatigue, brain fog, headaches, food sensitivities, sinus issues, or mysterious symptoms that refuse to improve...
Mold could be the missing piece.
Not because mold causes every illness.
But because ongoing mold exposure can prevent your body from responding to the very protocols you're investing in.
That's why today I'm going to show you the first steps to heal from mold—in the order I recommend to my own clients.
Because order matters.
A lot.
Why Most Mold Healing Protocols Fail Before They Even Begin
Here's the biggest myth I see online.
"Just start detoxing."
No.
Not yet.
Imagine standing inside a room filled with carbon monoxide.
Would you fix the problem by taking supplements?
Of course not.
You'd leave the room.
That's exactly how I think about severe toxic mold exposure.
If your environment continues exposing you every single day, your body has to spend all of its energy surviving instead of healing.
That doesn't mean supplements never help.
It means timing matters.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people beginning a complicated mold healing protocol before confirming they even have a current mold problem.
Instead, I encourage clients to become investigators first.
Collect data.
Then make decisions.
That approach may feel slower.
Ironically, it's usually much faster.
Because every decision becomes intentional instead of expensive guesswork.
Step 1: Confirm Mold Exposure Before You Start Any Mold Healing Plan
This surprises people.
Many assume the first step is buying supplements.
It isn't.
The first step is confirming that mold exposure is actually affecting you.
There are two situations.
Situation #1: You Can See the Mold
Maybe you pulled up flooring.
Maybe drywall came down after water damage.
Maybe there's visible black mold around a dishwasher or behind a wall.
If mold is clearly visible, you've already answered one important question.
The exposure is real.
Now the question becomes how extensive it is.
Situation #2: You Suspect Mold but Can't Prove It
This is where most people live.
They've developed symptoms like:
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Sinus congestion
- Food sensitivities
- Skin problems
They wonder if mold illness could explain everything.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Symptoms alone aren't enough.
I don't recommend building an entire mold treatment plan around suspicion.
I recommend testing.
That's how we avoid months—or years—of unnecessary treatments.
Why I Recommend Testing Your Body First
Many people immediately purchase a home mold test.
I actually recommend doing the opposite.
Your body tells us whether mold is affecting you.
That's the question that matters most.
If your body shows evidence of mold illness, then we investigate your home.
If it doesn't, we may need to explore other root causes before spending money on environmental testing.
This simple shift saves many of my clients hundreds—sometimes thousands—of dollars.
The Mold Tests I Recommend Starting With
Inside the Better Belly Method, we typically begin with body testing.
The podcast discusses:
- Organic Acids Testing (OAT)
- Mycotoxin testing
Each test measures something different.
They also have different strengths and weaknesses.
Choosing the right one matters because I regularly see people purchase one test...
...only to realize later they needed the other.
That's money you shouldn't have to spend.
Don't Ignore False Negatives
Here's something almost nobody talks about.
A negative mold test doesn't always mean mold isn't there.
I've seen people with ongoing mold sickness receive urine tests that looked surprisingly normal.
Why?
Because sometimes the body isn't releasing mold toxins well.
They're still there.
They're simply not showing up in the urine.
That's why I never evaluate a single marker in isolation.
I look at the entire pattern.
Other markers on the test can strongly suggest mold is still playing a role, even when the obvious mold markers stay low.
That's one reason why interpretation matters just as much as testing itself.
Step 2: Test Your Home After Confirming Mold Illness
Once we've confirmed that mold is affecting your body...
...then it's time to ask another question.
Where is it coming from?
That's where environmental testing becomes incredibly valuable.
One of my favorite tools is an ERMI test.
An ERMI doesn't tell you exactly where mold hides.
It tells you something just as important.
How significant the mold burden is inside your home.
That number changes everything.
Because not every mold problem requires the same response.
Some homes allow people to reduce exposure while working through remediation.
Others require getting out much sooner.
Without that information, you're making huge financial and health decisions based on guesswork.
I don't want that for you.
I want you making decisions with confidence.
Because confidence comes from data—not fear.
What Your ERMI Score Means for Your Mold Healing Protocol
Here's where many people accidentally waste months.
They finally confirm they have mold illness.
They find mold in their home.
Then they ask...
"Should I just start treating mold now?"
Not necessarily.
Your next step depends on how much mold you're living with.
That's why I love using an ERMI.
It doesn't just tell you mold exists.
It helps determine how aggressive your next move needs to be.
One number can completely change your mold healing plan.
An ERMI Score Above 20 Changes Everything
This is probably the hardest truth I share with clients.
If your ERMI score is 20 or higher, I have not seen clients make meaningful progress while continuing to live in that environment.
Read that again.
No supplement fixes ongoing exposure.
No detox tea.
No binder.
No fancy protocol.
No elimination diet.
None of them can consistently overcome severe ongoing mold exposure.
I know that's discouraging.
But it's also freeing.
Because now you know where to focus your energy.
Instead of wondering why another supplement isn't working...
...you can put that time and money toward changing the environment that's keeping your body stuck.
Sometimes the most powerful treatment isn't something you buy.
It's simply reducing what you're breathing every day.
Should You Move or Remediate?
This depends on your situation.
There isn't one right answer.
I generally see two categories.
You Own Your Home
If you own your home, you'll eventually have decisions to make.
Questions like:
- Should you remediate?
- Should you sell?
- Is the damage extensive enough to justify moving?
- Can remediation restore the home safely?
Those aren't easy decisions.
But they become much easier when you already know your exposure level.
You Rent
Renting comes with different challenges.
Sometimes landlords act quickly.
Sometimes they don't.
If the environment isn't safe and meaningful remediation isn't happening, remaining there can continue exposing you every single day.
That's why many people begin exploring temporary housing while they work through next steps.
Sometimes Temporary Housing Is the Fastest Path Forward
I know this conversation can feel overwhelming.
Especially if you're thinking...
"There's no way I can afford to move."
I've worked with families who:
- Stayed with relatives.
- Used Airbnb temporarily.
- Couch surfed while remediation happened.
- Moved into short-term rentals.
None of those options were ideal.
But they created something priceless.
Distance from the exposure.
One family even lived out of suitcases while their home underwent remediation.
It wasn't glamorous.
It wasn't convenient.
But it allowed healing to begin much sooner.
Can't Leave Yet? Here's How to Reduce Mold Exposure
Sometimes leaving immediately isn't possible.
I understand that.
Financial realities matter.
If that's where you are, don't panic.
While reducing exposure isn't the same as eliminating it, every improvement helps.
Here are some of the strategies I recommend most often.
Open Your Windows Every Day
This one costs nothing.
Open windows for about 20 minutes daily.
Think of it as "burping your house."
Fresh air helps dilute indoor contaminants and stale air.
When possible, create airflow across different sides of the house.
During winter or summer, simply choose the coolest or least humid part of the day.
Use Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) Instead of Only HEPA Filters
This surprises many people.
Most people immediately buy a HEPA filter.
HEPA filters absolutely have value.
But I prefer adding photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology because it works differently.
Rather than simply trapping particles, PCO technology creates hydroxyl molecules that help break down contaminants in the air.
In our own home, we've used HiTech Air Reactors for years.
We've also seen encouraging results from clients using Puraclenze systems.
If your budget only allows one unit...
Put it where you spend the most time.
Usually that's your bedroom.
You're sleeping there for seven to nine hours every night.
That's a tremendous opportunity to reduce exposure.
Small Changes Can Produce Big Wins
One of my favorite stories involves my daughter.
She started preschool.
Within two days, she developed repeated nosebleeds.
We added a PCO unit to her classroom.
The nosebleeds stopped.
That doesn't prove every symptom comes from mold.
But it reminds us something important.
Cleaner air matters.
Sometimes small environmental changes create improvements you never expected.
Don't Forget About Your Sinuses
Here's another area that gets overlooked.
Your sinuses.
Many people focus only on their gut.
But mold doesn't stay in one location.
The sinuses often become colonized after prolonged mold exposure.
That's one reason we include a gentle nasal protocol inside the Better Belly Blueprint.
The goal isn't to aggressively wipe everything out.
The goal is supporting healthier sinuses while you continue addressing the bigger picture.
Clients commonly report improvements with:
- Sinus congestion
- Postnasal drip
- Frequent sinus infections
- Headaches
I even noticed significant improvement in my own tinnitus while I was still working through mold exposure.
If you'd like step-by-step guidance, learn more about the Better Belly Blueprint, where we walk clients through these protocols based on their lab results instead of guesswork.
Don't Forget Your Clothes
Here's one tip people rarely think about.
Your clothing.
Fabric is porous.
It can hold onto mold fragments, spores, and odors after prolonged exposure.
I regularly wash towels, pajamas, and frequently worn clothing using:
- Vinegar
- Regular detergent
- Tea tree essential oil
Sometimes I'll swap tea tree for lemon, orange, or eucalyptus oil.
No, this isn't the entire solution.
But reducing exposure often comes from stacking many simple habits together.
Those little habits add up over time.
Remember: Lower Exposure Always Wins
Here's what I want you to remember.
You will never live in a world with zero mold.
That's impossible.
Mold exists outdoors.
It belongs there.
The mold that creates problems often grows inside buildings with moisture, poor ventilation, and water damage.
Your goal isn't perfection.
Your goal is less exposure.
Every step toward a healthier environment gives your immune system more room to recover.
