Still Have Diverticulosis on a High Fiber Diet? Here's why

Let’s get one thing straight:

Fiber is not your gut’s savior.

If you’ve been:

  • Eating salads like it’s your job

  • Chugging water

  • Taking magnesium, probiotics, or Metamucil

…and you STILL can’t poop?

You’re not broken.

You’ve just been told the wrong story.

And today, we’re rewriting it. 🔥

The Fiber Myth: Why Doctors Recommend It for Diverticulosis and Constipation

If you’ve been diagnosed with diverticulosis, your doctor probably said:

👉 “Eat more fiber.”

Sounds logical, right?

Here’s the mainstream belief:

  • Low fiber → constipation

  • Constipation → pressure in the colon

  • Pressure → diverticula (those little pouches)

So the “solution”?

More fiber = more poop = less pressure

But here’s the problem…

👉 This theory was never strongly proven.

It actually dates back to observations from the 1960s and even earlier with people like John Harvey Kellogg (yes, the cereal guy 👀).

And yet…

Modern research is starting to challenge this entire idea.

What the Research Actually Says About Fiber and Diverticulosis

A study funded by the National Institutes of Health looked at over 2,100 people.

The title?

“A High Fiber Diet Does Not Protect Against Asymptomatic Diverticulosis.”

Let me translate that for you:

👉 Fiber did NOT prevent diverticulosis.

But wait… it gets wilder.

What they found:

  • People eating MORE fiber had MORE diverticulosis

  • People with more frequent bowel movements had higher risk

  • Constipation was NOT a strong risk factor

Read that again.

More fiber ≠ better gut health

More pooping ≠ protection

This flips everything we’ve been told.

Why Fiber Might Be Making Your Constipation WORSE

Now let’s talk real life.

Because I’ve worked with hundreds of constipated clients…

And I’ve seen this pattern over and over again:

👉 High fiber diets making symptoms worse.

Here’s why 👇

1. Fiber Feeds Bacteria (But What If You Have Too Much?)

Fiber is a prebiotic.

That means it feeds your gut bacteria.

Sounds good… until it’s not.

If you already have:

  • Bacterial overgrowth

  • Imbalance (dysbiosis)

  • Hidden infections

Then adding more fiber is like:

🔥 Pouring gasoline on a fire

Result?

  • More gas

  • More bloating

  • Slower motility

  • More constipation

2. Low Digestive Enzymes = Fiber Fermentation Nightmare

Most people with constipation don’t break food down properly.

I see this ALL the time.

Three key systems matter here:

  • Stomach acid

  • Bile (from your liver)

  • Pancreatic enzymes

If these are low?

👉 Fiber doesn’t digest properly.

Instead, it:

  • Sits

  • Ferments

  • Produces gas

  • Slows everything down

You don’t get movement… you get misery.

3. Your Gut Isn’t Moving Because It’s Stressed, Not Empty

Fiber is supposed to “bulk things up.”

But here’s the truth:

👉 Your gut doesn’t need more bulk.
👉 It needs better function.

Your gut already knows how to move.

It just won’t… when:

  • Bacteria are off

  • Digestion is weak

  • Inflammation is present

The Real Root Causes of Constipation (That No One Talks About)

Let’s cut through the noise.

Constipation is not a fiber deficiency.

It’s a function problem.

Here are the real culprits I see:

🔍 Root causes:

  • Low stomach acid

  • Sluggish bile flow

  • Poor pancreatic enzyme output

  • Gut infections (like C. diff)

  • Bacterial imbalance (SIBO-style patterns)

  • Nervous system dysregulation

None of these are fixed by:

  • Fiber

  • Magnesium

  • Probiotics

👉 They might mask symptoms.

But they don’t fix the problem.

Why Diverticulosis Isn’t Just About Constipation

Here’s something that should make you pause:

👉 People with MORE bowel movements had MORE diverticulosis.

So no…

This isn’t just about “not pooping enough.”

Researchers even admitted:

👉 They don’t fully understand why diverticulosis forms.

One leading theory?

Bacteria.

And that aligns perfectly with what I see clinically.

Because when we improve:

  • Digestion

  • Bacterial balance

  • Motility

Clients experience:

  • Less bloating

  • Less pain

  • Better bowel movements

  • Better overall health

Even if we don’t re-scope their colon.

My Story: When Fiber Failed Me

Back in 2015…

I was severely constipated.

Doctors told me:

  • Eat more fiber

  • Try low FODMAP

  • Drink more water

I did ALL of it.

For TWO YEARS.

And guess what?

👉 Nothing worked.

I still had:

  • Pain

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • Zero consistent bowel movements

It wasn’t until I stopped chasing fiber…

And started addressing root causes…

That everything changed.

What Actually Works (Instead of More Fiber)

Here’s where we shift from frustration → freedom.

Step 1: Fix Stomach Acid

Low acid = poor breakdown = slow gut

Step 2: Support Bile Flow

Bile keeps things moving and lubricated

Step 3: Restore Enzyme Function

You need proper digestion before elimination

Step 4: Address Bacterial Imbalance

Stop feeding the wrong bugs

Step 5: Rebuild Motility

Your gut needs rhythm—not bulk

Quick Recap

  • Fiber does NOT fix constipation or diverticulosis

  • Research shows higher fiber may increase diverticulosis risk

  • Constipation is a function problem—not a fiber problem

  • Root causes include low enzymes and bacterial imbalance

  • Fix digestion first → then your gut can move naturally

FAQ

1. Can fiber make constipation worse?

Yes. Especially if you have bacterial imbalance or low digestive enzymes.

2. Is diverticulosis caused by constipation?

Not necessarily. Research shows the link is weaker than we thought.

3. Should I stop eating fiber completely?

No. But stop relying on it as your solution.

4. What’s the real cause of chronic constipation?

Usually poor digestion, bacterial imbalance, and weak motility.

5. Do probiotics help constipation?

Not always. They can worsen symptoms if bacteria are already imbalanced.
