Unmedicated Homebirth VBAC: My Vaginal Birth After C-Section

So, you’ve had a C-section. Maybe your doctor told you it was the “only safe choice.” Maybe you were blindsided by an emergency. Either way, you’re now asking the same burning questions I once did:

👉 Can I really have a vaginal birth after cesarean?
👉 What are the actual VBAC risks no one talks about?
👉 Is a homebirth safe after a C-section?
👉 And honestly… which recovery is harder — C-section vs VBAC?

This is the blog I wish someone had handed me when I was weighing my options. Raw. Real. Zero sugarcoating. Because moms don’t need more fear tactics — we need the truth.

Today I’m pulling back the curtain on my second birth: a VBAC at home. You’ll hear exactly how I faced the fear of another breech pregnancy, prepared my body, worked with a homebirth midwife, and navigated the surprises of tearing during birth, a birth hematoma, and postpartum recovery that looked NOTHING like my C-section.

If you’ve been told “once a C-section, always a C-section” — buckle up. This is going to change how you see birth.

Why I Chose a VBAC (and Why You Might Too)

After my first birth ended in a surgical scar, I walked away feeling two things at once:

  • Grateful. My daughter was healthy. The surgery kept us safe.

  • Frustrated. I had labored for 48 hours. I had gone in ready for a homebirth. But because no one realized she was a breech baby, I was wheeled into an operating room.

That left me asking: could I try again? Could I do what my body was designed to do — bring a baby into the world vaginally?

Here’s the truth most OB offices won’t tell you:

  • VBAC is possible. Even after one, two, or more C-sections.

  • VBAC risks exist — but they’re not as black-and-white as mainstream medicine makes them out to be.

  • Homebirth VBACs happen every day, safely, with skilled midwives who know how to watch both mom and baby.

And for me? The idea of returning to a hospital — fluorescent lights, constant monitoring, staff who don’t know me — felt worse than the thought of labor itself.

So, I committed: this time, I was going for an unmedicated VBAC at home.

Facing My Biggest Fear: Another Breech Baby

When you’ve already had one breech pregnancy, guess what? You’re statistically more likely to have another. That thought haunted me.

My first midwife hadn’t caught it. She didn’t use portable ultrasound. She relied on palpation and heart tones. And it cost me the homebirth I wanted.

This time, I interviewed homebirth midwives until I found one with the tools and the confidence I needed. She pulled out her portable ultrasound at my very first visit and said:

“We’ll know if baby’s breech. And if she is, we’ll do everything possible to flip her.”

That reassurance was EVERYTHING. And together, we built a plan to avoid a breech baby:

  • Chiropractic during pregnancy. Not just adjustments — but deep fascial work to release tight patterns.

  • Pelvic floor therapy. Creating space so baby could settle head-down.

  • Prenatal exercises. Simple, daily moves that kept my pelvis balanced.

The result? My daughter locked head-down early in the third trimester and never budged.

Ladies — THIS is why I preach root-cause care. Don’t just cross your fingers and hope. Take action.

Preparing My Body (and My Kitchen) for Birth

A strong VBAC doesn’t start in labor. It starts MONTHS earlier.

Here’s what I focused on:

  • Getting out of mold. Yep. We’d moved into a moldy home with family. I developed tinnitus within weeks. Not exactly the prenatal glow I was hoping for. We moved, detoxed gently, and I used my gentle nasal treatmentprotocol to support my body. Mold-free pregnancy = stronger mama.

  • The right supplements. Forget gummy prenatals. I used Designs for Health Prenatal Pro and a high-DHA omega by Nordic Naturals. For iron, I trusted Floradix (actually Floravital, the wheat-free version) — the only thing that cured my fatigue and breathlessness in the second trimester.

  • Food that actually worked. Gluten wrecks me. So do grains and dairy. Instead of stressing about meal trains or Pinterest recipes, my husband and I created a 60+ page family recipe book for pregnancy. Inside:

    • Gluten free pregnancy recipes that don’t taste like cardboard.

    • Grain free pregnancy recipes that pass the toddler test.

    • Dairy free pregnancy recipes that actually fill you up.

And yes — I’m giving it to you for free. Because every mama deserves food that makes postpartum easier. 👉 Grab the Family Recipe Book here.

Labor Begins: The Longest Night of My Life

It started at 4 p.m. My toddler decided to headbutt me during contractions (not recommended). By 7 a.m. the next day, I was holding my baby girl.

Here’s the real talk about VBAC labor:

  • It feels eerily similar to C-section labor. Contractions still hit like a freight train.

  • I waited for the “different pressure” of a head-down baby. Nope. Didn’t happen.

  • What DID happen? The bloody show labor sign that never showed up in my first. That tiny streak of blood gave me SO much hope that my body was progressing.

I labored in a homebirth pool, in the shower, and on my knees. The pool gave me rest but didn’t progress labor. The shower was magic. Warm water, hands and knees, deep breathing.

And when it came time to push? My midwife suggested standing. I thought she was insane. But when I stood — my body said YES. One hour later, my daughter was born.

VBAC Recovery vs C-Section Recovery: The Shocking Truth

Let’s cut the fluff:

  • After my C-section recovery, I walked a mile at three days postpartum. (Don’t do that. I didn’t realize it was reckless.)

  • After my unmedicated VBAC, I could barely roll in bed. I tore. I developed a birth hematoma. I couldn’t sit without pain for weeks.

So which is harder? C-section vs VBAC recovery isn’t a simple answer. For me, the C-section was physically easier, but emotionally crushing. The VBAC was physically brutal, but emotionally healing.

And postpartum brought its own challenges:

  • Pelvic floor after birth felt wrecked.

  • I worried about pelvic organ prolapse after birth.

  • Dysfunctional urination postpartum was real. Peeing hurt. Sitting hurt. Everything hurt.

But here’s the kicker: the emotional win of writing a new birth story outweighed the pain.

The Hidden Costs (and Savings) of Homebirth

Most women never hear this:

  • Homebirth cost is often NOT covered by traditional insurance.

  • We paid thousands for my first C-section + failed homebirth.

  • With our second, we switched to a cost-sharing program. Coverage included homebirth, midwife, postpartum care.

Total bill? $0.

You read that right. My VBAC was essentially a free birth — because I got out of the broken insurance system. If you’ve ever wondered about alternatives, check out Knew Health. It’s the single best financial decision we’ve made as a family.

Homebirth Advantages (and Honest Cons)

Let’s bust through the Pinterest-perfect fantasy and get real.

Homebirth advantages:

  • You choose your midwife birth team — people you actually trust.

  • You control the environment. Lights. Music. Privacy.

  • No hospital pressure to induce, augment, or medicate.

Homebirth pros and cons:

  • Pro: Zero car ride while contracting. Con: Your neighbors might hear you roar (mine did 🙃).

  • Pro: Midwives bring tools like a homebirth pool and portable ultrasound. Con: You’ll need transfer plans if something serious comes up.

For me? The pros far outweighed the cons.

What I Wish Every Mama Knew About VBAC

If you’re considering a vaginal birth after cesarean, here’s my straight-shooting advice:

  • Don’t buy the fear. Doctors highlight worst-case VBAC risks without telling you the risks of repeat C-sections.

  • Hire the right team. A skilled homebirth midwife changes everything.

  • Prep your body. Chiropractic during pregnancy and pelvic floor therapy aren’t “extras” — they’re game-changers.

  • Feed yourself well. Having a stash of gluten free, grain free, dairy free pregnancy recipes saved my sanity.

  • Plan postpartum. Birth isn’t the finish line. Recovery is. Protect your pelvic floor after birth. Address any pelvic organ prolapse early.
