283// Stop Wasting Money on the DUTCH Test (Here’s Why)

September 25, 2025

The DUTCH Test May Be Wasting Your Money. Here's what to know.

You’ve probably heard the hype.

Maybe your practitioner suggested the Dutch test. Maybe you saw a functional medicine influencer rave about it. Or maybe you’ve been wondering: If I could just see all my hormone levels, maybe I’d finally figure out what’s wrong.

Here’s the truth you won’t hear anywhere else:

The Dutch test is both the best and the weakest hormone test out there.

Sounds contradictory, right? Stick with me. Because if you’ve been struggling with hormone imbalance—whether that’s PMS, irregular cycles, mood swings, fatigue, or sleep issues—this is the perspective that can save you thousands of dollars, years of frustration, and the pain of yet another dead-end test.

What Is the Dutch Test?

The Dutch test for hormones is a urine-based test. Instead of a simple blood draw at your doctor’s office, you collect dried urine samples at home—yes, you literally pee on a strip, let it dry, and send it off. That’s why you’ll often hear it called the Dutch test at home.

It looks at:

  • Sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone

  • Adrenal hormones like cortisol, cortisone, and DHEA

  • Metabolites (the breakdown products of hormones, which blood tests can’t show)

This is what makes the Dutch test so fascinating. Unlike blood work, which only shows “top-level” hormones, the Dutch reveals how your body is processing those hormones through liver detox pathways. That’s why you’ll see people leaving glowing Dutch test reviews online.

On paper, it looks like the complete picture. The Dutch test complete panel (by Precision Analytical, the lab that created it) promises to give you all the answers about your hormones.

But here’s the kicker…

Why the Dutch Test Is the Weakest Test for Real Healing

Let me say it plainly: Knowing your hormone numbers does not tell you how to fix them.

That’s the fatal flaw of the Dutch test.

Take progesterone, for example. Let’s say your Dutch test results show low progesterone. Does that mean you need hormone replacement therapy? Herbs? Supplements?

Nope. Low progesterone almost always points to inflammation. Your body is basically saying, “This is not a safe time to get pregnant.” So it shuts down progesterone production.

The test showed you a problem. But it didn’t tell you why.

Same with estrogen. High estrogen? Could be a detox issue. Low estrogen? Could be nutrient deficiency, poor gut absorption, over-exercising, or even smoking. Again—the number doesn’t reveal the root cause.

And cortisol? I can’t tell you how many women come to me saying:

“I knew I had high cortisol—my Dutch test confirmed it!”

Okay, but what caused it? Was it psychological stress? Pathogens like H. pylori? Nutrient deficiencies? Mold? Heavy metals? Food sensitivities?

The Dutch test doesn’t tell you. And that’s the problem.

The Most Useful Marker on the Dutch Test

Now—before you think I’m just here to trash the Dutch—I’ll give credit where it’s due.

The most valuable part of the Dutch is its look at estrogen detoxification, especially phase two methylation.

This is gold.

If your test shows slow methylation, that’s a clue we can actually act on. Sometimes it ties to genetic mutations. Other times it’s nutrient insufficiency. And yes, there are specific supplements that can speed it up. I’ve seen clients’ estrogen dominance symptoms and mood issues improve dramatically once this piece was addressed.

But let’s be clear: This is one marker on a very expensive test. For most people, the Dutch is not the place to start.

When the Dutch Test Can Be Helpful

So, when does the Dutch test make sense?

  • Fine-tuning: If you’ve already done deeper functional testing (like the GI Map, Organic Acids Test, HTMA, or food sensitivity testing), the Dutch can help refine your protocol.

  • Confirming detox issues: If symptoms scream estrogen dominance and you want to know if phase one or phase two detox is struggling.

  • Unusual cases: Women with suspected PCOS, irregular cycles, or stubborn hormone symptoms sometimes get extra clarity here.

Think of it like this: the Dutch test is a layering tool, not a starting point.

The Tests That Actually Reveal Root Causes

Here’s the real deal: hormones don’t just go off for no reason.

Something deeper is driving the imbalance.

That’s why, in my program (the Better Belly Blueprint), we don’t start with the Dutch. Instead, clients use our Lab Chooser Tool to determine which tests are most relevant based on symptoms and history.

Here are the tests that actually move the needle:

  • GI Map – to uncover hidden infections, pathogens, and gut imbalances.

  • Organic Acids Test (OAT) – to identify nutrient deficiencies, yeast, mold, and mitochondrial stress.

  • HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) – to assess mineral balance and toxic heavy metals.

  • Food Zoomer tests – to pinpoint true food sensitivities causing inflammation.

These are the labs that uncover why your progesterone, estrogen, or cortisol is off. Once you know that, you can actually build a healing protocol.

Why Most People Waste Thousands on the Wrong Tests

Here’s what I hear almost daily:

“I’ve spent over $10,000 on my health. I’ve seen ten different practitioners. I’ve tried every diet. And I’m still sick.”

Sound familiar?

Most of that wasted money goes to the wrong tests. Either incomplete testing (like basic blood work) or overhyped ones (like the Dutch).

The truth is—you can heal your hormone health without the Dutch test. You need to fix the root causes behind the hormone imbalance, not just stare at numbers.

This is why I’m always blunt with clients: If cash is tight, skip the Dutch. Spend your money on the GI Map, OAT, HTMA, or food testing first.

The Hormone Symptoms That Fool Everyone

Here’s the trap: your symptoms feel hormonal.

  • PMS

  • Mood swings

  • Cramping

  • Tender breasts

  • Fatigue

  • Irregular cycles

So of course you think: I should test my hormones.

But symptoms can be deceiving.

Low progesterone? It’s inflammation.
High estrogen? It’s detox overload.
High cortisol? It’s biochemical stress from toxins or pathogens.

The Dutch test shows you the smoke. But if you want to put out the fire, you need to know where the flames are coming from.

What About Melatonin and Sleep?

Quick note on melatonin: yes, the Dutch test can measure it.

But even here, it’s incomplete. 80% of melatonin is made in the gut—not the brain. If your test shows low melatonin, the real problem is almost always in your gut. Again, you need the GI Map or OAT to figure out why.

See the theme? The Dutch points to surface-level problems. The deeper tests reveal the why.

Dutch Test + GI Map: The Combo That Actually Works

Now, sometimes I do recommend pairing the Dutch test + GI Map.

Why? Because while the GI Map shows pathogens, bacteria, and gut inflammation, the Dutch can show how that stress is wrecking your cortisol curve or slowing your estrogen detox.

Together, they tell a fuller story. But again—if you can only pick one? GI Map wins every time.

The Hard Truth About Hormone Testing

Here’s the truth most practitioners won’t tell you:

You don’t heal hormones by chasing hormone numbers.

You heal hormones by restoring hormone harmony—and that happens when you address root causes:

  • Infections

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Mold

  • Metals

  • Food triggers

Once those are addressed, your body often restores hormone balance on its own. No bioidentical hormones. No bandaid fixes. Just natural, sustainable healing.

My Recommendation on the Dutch Test

So here’s my final word:

  • The Dutch test hormones panel is the most advanced hormone test available.

  • It’s also the weakest test if you’re trying to actually heal.

  • Use it last, not first.

  • Always pair it with deeper root-cause testing.

  • Never let it replace looking at your gut, nutrients, or toxins.

If you’ve been considering the Dutch test because you’re desperate for answers—stop. Start where it matters most.
